Rebecca Alperin, Ph.D.
Dr. Rebecca Alperin received her undergraduate degree from Chatham University (cum laude and with honors in psychology), an MS in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University, and an MA in psychology from the University of Toledo. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Toledo in 2004, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship through the Northwest Ohio Psychology Consortium with an emphasis on treating children and adolescents.
Dr. Alperin worked for several years at a local community mental health center before starting private practice in 2010. She has provided individual and group supervision of doctoral-level clinical psychology graduate students both in agency and private practice settings, and was a part-time instructor for group practicum through the University of Toledo’s Clinical Psychology program.
Dr. Alperin works with children, adolescents, and adults, and specializes in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, and behavioral and adjustment issues. She also has a specialty in conducting psychological evaluations to help clarify diagnostic questions and provide appropriate treatment recommendations for issues such as ADHD, autism, or learning difficulties. Her clients have described her as kind, caring, and helpful.
Brenda Cole, Ph.D.
Dr. Brenda Cole completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toledo, with a dual major in psychology and philosophy. She completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. After completion of the fellowship, she became an Assistant Professor of Medicine for the following 8 years. As faculty she provided mental health services for cancer patients, and conducted research on the benefits of meditation in coping with cancer. She has earned numerous research grants and has published papers on the role of spirituality and religion in coping with various life challenges, including cancer.
Through her work at the cancer institute, along with 17 years of private practice, she has developed extensive expertise in treating a wide range of mental health concerns, such as depression or anxiety for teenagers and adults. In addition, she has three areas of specialization: couples therapy, coping with illness, and addressing gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender issues. She has an inviting sense of humor, and warm, welcoming, clinical style.
Jennifer B. Smirnoff, Ph.D., MBA, LPCC-S
Dr. Jennifer Smirnoff received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Ohio University in 1996. She earned a master’s degree in Community Counseling from Eastern Michigan University in 1998. She received both her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (2002), and MBA (2016) from The University of Toledo.
Dr. Smirnoff served as a visiting faculty member of counseling at Western Michigan University and The University of Toledo. She served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry from 2009-2016 where she provided psychotherapy instruction and supervision to psychiatry residents, in addition to providing clinical services in the Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic at UTMC. Dr. Smirnoff has participated in research throughout her career including PTSD.
Dr. Smirnoff has worked as a counselor for over 20 years in academic and agency settings. She has been in private practice since 2016. She has expertise in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as behavior modification and parenting. She works with both children and adults specializing in anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, mood disorders, and ADHD.
